Ten things you must do in Sicily

Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and it is one of the most beautiful Italian regions. It has a rich and unique culture, especially with regard to its arts, music, literature, cuisine and architecture. Sicily is also famous for its archaeological and ancient sites such as the Necropoli of Pantalica, the Valley of the Temples and Selinunte.

This region offers two sides to its character: on the coasts people can enjoy an amazing seaside landscape, whilst the countryside is characterised by mountains and hills, among which you will find Mount Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe.

Sicily is full of historical reminds, where you can admire endless Roman and Greek ruins, which convey the charm of the island. There are six UNESCO World Heritage Sites which are a must see: Valle dei Templi, Villa Romana del Casale, Aeolina Island, the baroque towns of the Val di Noto, Necropolis of Pantalica and Mount Etna.

The island offers typically Mediterranean weather with mild and wet winters and hot, dry summers.  A lot of people also visit Sicily for the cuisine, which is one of the best in the world: people can enjoy typical dishes like Cannolo siciliano, Arancino, Pasta and wines. This is a healthy cuisine, prepared only with fresh ingredients and often nicknamed God’s Kitchen.

Sicilians are simple and friendly and they love tourists, welcoming them with great joy. At Holiday Homes in Italy, we can’t think of many reasons not to put Sicily on your itinerary for 2014!
