For such a popular international destination, many holidaymakers still would struggle to pinpoint Liguria on a map of Italy. This is the sun-drenched, glamorous coastal region of Italy. It is also known as the Italian Riviera. Whilst its neighbour to the West, France, manages to get column inches in many travellers’ magazines, Liguria undeservedly often gets overlooked.
This region is simply delicious; there are glamorous coastal towns, great coastlines and a backdrop of pretty valleys. Its strategic position means that it enjoys a great climate, making trips in early and late season possible. The weather also contributes to its fantastic backdrop of Mediterranean vegetation and well-known gardens – imagine olive groves, vineyards and lemon trees cascading down to the coast. Liguria is famous for its olive oil, wine and for its flowers amongst other things!
Like so much of Italy, Liguria is a land of contrasts. For those looking for a more traditional stay, you will find pretty sea hamlets and valley villages that are full of character and history. The Cinque Terre or “The Five Lands” is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and comprises of five villages (Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore) built on cliffs which overlook the sea. Paths, trains and boats connect the villages, which is part of its charm – it really is something different!
If you are looking for something more accessible, then on the Coast, you will find the more popular and bustling resort towns, such as San Remo. San Remo is a good all-rounder; easy access to some great beaches nearby and a town which is great for shopping and eating out.
Travelling around
Liguria certainly will have enough to keep you occupied during your stay – Alassio on the coast is a wonderful town and Portofino near the Cinque Terre must not be missed. Some of the valleys host beautiful villages such as Dolcedo, Dolceaqua and Apricale. There is even a principality called Seborga, which independently sits at the edge of Bordighera.
For those looking to travel further afield, Liguria is well placed. If you are staying in the West, then a day trip over the border to France is very easy; Menton, Nice or Antibes are all within easy reach. If you are staying in the East, then you are bordering with Tuscany, making a trip to Lucca or Pisa a great day out.
