Ski Holidays in Bardonecchia

If you are looking for something different this season, why not try Bardonecchia, which is often overlooked by UK skiers but whose profile was raised by some key events in the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics, including the snowboarding giant slalom and half pipe.

Bardonecchia is just one hour from Turin airport by road and one of the few resorts with a mainline train station.  It is a sizeable resort with good skiing well-groomed pistes and a great base to tour other nearby French and Italian resorts.

There are three parts to the resort on either side of the town and connected by a free ski-bus. The skiing itself is substantial, with 140km of pistes. The slopes are wide and long and there is an excellent choice of intermediate slopes. There are plenty of snow sure runs above the middle stations and some snowmaking facilities top to bottom. The beauty of Bardonecchia is that apart from the weekends, when the locals pour to the resort from Turin, the slopes are relatively free and uncrowded during the week.

The three valleys can be reached from Orelle on the French side and the Milky Way (Sauze D’Oulx, Sestriere etc) by car and an extension to the lift pass is available for those wishing to explore the Italian neighbouring resorts. All are a short drive away; Sauze (25 mins), Claviere / Montgenevre (40 mins), Sestriere (40 mins).

Bardonecchia has a good range of bars, restauarants and pizzerias throughout the town and is calmer during the week and becoming very busy on the weekend. In terms of non-ski activities, the resort rate higher than most with quaint villages to explore interconnected by the bus service, a sports centre, gym, swimming pool, cinema, sauna and ice rink. There are also weekly markets and numerous shops and boutiques on the traditional pedestrianised shopping area ‘Via Medail’; one of the longest shopping streets in the alps. The mainline station also allows day trips to the wonderful City of Turin.

All in all, Bardonecchia offers a good value ski holiday in Italy with excellent eateries, lovely scenery, interesting skiing and friendly locals.
