Discover Gressoney - Skiing In Italy in the Aosta Valley (Monterosa Ski area)

The Aosta valley is very much an unknown entity to the majority of skiers outside Italy and France but it is developing a very positive reputation and is expected to really take off over the next few years. People don’t know what they are missing: 700 km of slopes, beautiful scenery and some excellent resorts. The area itself is spread across the linked resorts of Gressoney St Jean, Gressoney La Trinite, Champoluc and Alagna and tucked beneath towering peaks on the Italian-Swiss border. This area is what the critics are starting to call Italy’s answer to France’s Trois Vallees (albeit a smaller version).  The pistes are well groomed with an excellent lift system and intermediates will be spoilt for choice with long cruising runs. Beginners have lots of good slopes and advanced skiers will enjoy off-pisting at Alagna.

The Gressoney resorts
Gressoney is the most well known of the ski areas in the area and offers borders and skiers the opportunity to enjoy over 180 km of terrain. Gressoney itself is split into two villages; Gressoney-La-Trinite and Gressoney-Saint-Jean.  Gressoney is a quaint little village with cobbled streets and wooden buildings. It is a good value resort and has a selection of shops and restaurants. This is a small family orientated location, perfect for those wishing to relax and sample traditional cuisine after a good days skiing. The beauty of the town is that it is only 800 m from the chair lift to the slopes! The lifts from here reach a 2971 m altitude and there is some thrilling off-piste available for those looking for some adventure.

Gressoney-Saint-Jean is a bigger village down the valley with its own slopes. It offers some spectacular down hill runs that are racing standards. There is also 25km of cross country available (the Monterosalauf trail winds through the woods with beautiful view of glaciers).

General ski info
The resorts are popular with Italians at weekends who drive up from Milan and Turin but expect to have great stretches of quiet pistes throughout the week. The pistes themselves are mostly intermediate with a good selection of chairs and gondolas (with few drag lifts). There are plenty of long runs and the reliability of the snow is good, thanks to extensive snowmaking, altitude and good grooming.

For those looking for a little more adventure, there is plenty of off-piste action on the Alagna side of the mountain. Trips to Cervinia, La Thuile and Courmayeur are possible by car and covered by the Aosta Valley Ski Pass.

For those with Children, there is a large ski school and snow park at Antagnod near Champoluc and  a mini-Club at Gressoney-Saint-Jean.

Getting to Gressoney
The beauty of Gressoney is the relatively short transfer time. Turin is only 1.5 hours away and offers a host of low cost flight options. Private transfers available upon request.

For those who prefer freedom and flexibility of holiday, Holiday Homes in Italy has chosen some excellent self-catering ski apartments only 2km from the village centre. Is Gressoney for me?

Gressoney is really an interesting and old fashioned type of resort with plenty of charm and a real Italian rustic feel. If you are looking for great skiing and scenery with quiet and pretty resorts, then this could just be the tonic for you!
