Sestriere is a popular and cosmopolitan ski resort in the heart of the Milky Way. Together with the villages of Pragelato, Claviere, Sauze d'Oulx, Cesana Torinese, San Sicario, and Montgenievre in France, it makes up the Via Lattea skiing area. Sestriere is connected to 146 skiable pistes, with a total of up to 400 km of trails. Sestriere is also one of the few facilities where it is possible to ski at night on a floodlight run.
Sestriere regularly hosts Alpine Ski World Cup events, and it hosted the World Championships in 1997. It was a main venue during the 2006 Winter Olympic Games and the 2006 Winter Paralympics, hosting all the men's alpine skiing competitions and being the site of one of the three Olympic Villages.
The history of Sestriere as a ski resort, and later of the Vialattea, started in the 30's and it is now a modern tourist centre, ideal for those who love mountains and the sports linked to them. There is more than 8km of cross-country ski tracks, and there are also facilities for ice-skating in the very centre of the resort. There is a wide variety of activities for tourists, who can enjoy every kind of sport.
SKIING IN SESTRIERE
Beginner runs fan out above the ski school meeting point in the resort's centre and a special lift ticket given relevant limited lift access for beginners only is also available.
Intermediates will enjoy Sestriere's skiing the most, using the two main local areas of Banchetta and Sises. There are runs of all kinds from short steep moguls to long wide motorway cruisers. It's easy to get over to the pleasant wooded trails above neighbouring Sauze d'Oulx. The trails over to Montgenievre can be tackled by intermediate skiers via blues and reds. It is an exciting trip as you have the feeling of travelling from village to village.
Experts have fewer trails just for them but heli-skiing is popular in the area. Runs in the Amphitaeatro bowl and the blacks at the top of Sises and Motta are also highly regarded. A run good skiers should not miss in Sestriere is Mount Sises (which also gives access to excellent off piste from the slopes of Valle Ripa and Vallone del Chisonetto). This is the World Cup and World Championships giant slalom run. You reach the top (2600m) with the four passenger chair-lift Cit Roc and then a ski-lift. The run is steep but wide in the highest part then flatter around the Mount Alpette and becoming once again quite vertical under the chair lift where the old ski lift once passed.

The extensive Vialattea ski area offers skiers the possibility to link to five other ski resorts making a total of 400 km of slopes, many of them are artificially snowed and with ski-lifts and chair lifts for the disabled.
For the joy of mountain lovers, the Monterotta area offers a 10 km cross-country track and in front of the ski lifts you can ice skate in the open air rink.
Snowboarding in Sestriere
Sestriere now has a snowpark and Snowboarders have access to skiing on all slopes with plenty of wide slopes and off piste. With a large number of chair lifts it's a good resort for getting up the mountains. Several of the ski school's teachers are trained to teach 'boarding.
Sestriere Apres Ski
The resort is known for its cosmopolitan but also lively nightlife - especially at weekends when the relatively sophisticated crowds from Turin and Milan arrive en masse. There are two piano bars and the Tabatha discotheque. For a lively evening there's live music and karaoke some nights at Dreamers bar and the Brahms Pub has a reputation for its range of imported Irish beers. For Apres ski try out the Du Col bar, Irish Igloo bar, karaoke and live music at Al Kovo. Some bars come to life when there is an organised attraction and quizzes and karaoke at the Sestriere, live music at the Cavern. Pinky is a popular bar and restaurant, with low sofas in the classic Italian casual-chic style.
EATING OUT
There are plenty of options: there are 33 restaurants serving Italian, French and traditional cuisine, 30 bars, a nightclub and 40 shops to keep visitors busy. Sestriere is known for its stylish shops, classy dining, chic bars and nightclub entertainment, but it is quiet here during the week. The woody Raggio di Sole at Anfiteatro offers good local food, and good music
The rustic Antica Spelonca in Borgata is recommended for great local dishes. Despite its valley-bottom location, Il Capret at Borgata is popular, very friendly staff, reasonable prices, clean toilets.
GETTING TO SESTRIERE
The quickest and cheapest way to travel to Sestriere ski resort is to find one of the many cheap flights to Turin. Sestriere lies 70 miles from Turin, the nearest airport. From the international airport of Torino Caselle you can reach Sestriere in just over 1 hour, with a short train journey direct to the station at Oulx and a bus service from there. A public coach service connects Oulx with Sestriere (15 miles), and connects Turin with Sestriere via Pinerolo (56 miles). Other possibilities are Milan Linate and Milan Bergamo airports. If you fly to Turin and hire a car, access by road is via the A32 motorway to the Oulx tollbooth, then 15 miles to Sestriere ski resort.
By Railway and Buses
The Val of Susa is crossed by the axle railway international Rome-Paris. The trains are very frequent and all stop at the railway station of Oulx. Information: Trenitalia - Tel: 892021.

By airplane
From the international airport in Turin Caselle, Sestriere is reached in little more than a hour. A frequent bus shuttle connects the Airport of Turin with the Station FS Porta Nuova.
